The chairman of Air India, Natarajan Chandrasekaran, later published a statement online: “I confirm with deep sadness that Ahmedabad Air India flight AI 171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick was involved in a tragic accident today.”
“Our thoughts and deepest sympathy are for the families and loved ones of all who are affected by this devastating event.”
His statement goes on to say: “At the moment, our main focus is on supporting all the people and their families affected.”

“An emergency centre has been set up and a support team for the families has been set up.”
British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also said, saying to the press: “The images of a crash of an aircraft flying to London with many British citizens on board in the Indian city of Ahmedabad are devastating.”
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi added that the incident was “insolistic heartbreaking.”
“The tragedy in Ahmedabad made us stunned and sad,” he said in a statement.
“In this sad hour, my thoughts are with all those who are affected.”
The cause of the accident is not yet known.
